Manufacturers and brand owners are acutely aware of pet food’s susceptibility to oxidation. The risks associated with the formation of free radicals, the development of rancidity, and the subsequent deterioration of product quality, along with the negative impact on palatability and exposure on social media platforms, continue to be significant concerns. Oxidation control is a top priority. CFS’s natural NaSure® Antioxidants or synthetic Xtendra® Antioxidants address the long-term stabilization needs of both regular and premium types of pet food. Clearly, superior pet food diets containing polyunsaturated fatty acids require more potent solutions based on combined antioxidant systems.

It is essential to protect kibble both pre- and post-extrusion. Adding antioxidants to the dry base safeguards against the formation of free radicals and oxidation caused by the friction, shear, and heat of the extrusion process. After extrusion, depending on the oxidative challenge, a specific antioxidant protection system is added to the coating oil. Through a collaborative approach, CFS can assist in identifying the most optimal protection for the pet food system.

The development of primary oxidation products (hydroperoxides) and secondary oxidation products (in this case, hexanal) in extruded pet treats is protected by a natural antioxidant combination of 500 ppm dry NaSure® 580 (applied to the dry base/kibble matrix) and 1000 ppm liquid NaSure® 551 (applied to the coating oil based on rapeseed oil).
